Design Brief:

Garlic presses are kitchen utensils used to crush garlic cloves efficiently by forcing them through a grid of small holes. Offerings range widely in price, material, aesthetics, but meet the primary function. Performance and demographics for usability will be a key indicator for success. The aim is to successfully redesign a garlic press.

In order to identify the consumer, market and brief, preparatory work was undertaken including conducting design research and consumer analysis, target user understanding and suitable design process research.

QFD & Engineering Principles:

A Quality function deployment matrix is a tool used to quantify the importance and extent of relationship between the customer needs of a certain product, and the engineering requirements, allowing the designer to better understand the design problem. It’s also important to gain sufficient understanding in what general engineering principles shape how the product is used. The highest importance engineering specifications in terms of their relationship with customer requirements were: Size (17%), Cleaning operation, (15%), and Material (12%).

Concepts:

3 initial concepts were drafted. Based on key aspects identified from the PDS (product design specification), a Harris Profile for each concept was created. Concept 3 scored the best on the Harris profile having the greatest synergy with criteria from the PDS.Modularity was expanded upon in this developed concept 3, whereby the user can easily swap out both bottom and top attachments for different profiled twist blades.

Prototyping:

Having decided on a final concept, Modelling in CREO could commence. Reference products aided in correctly sizing the product. Once all parts had been modelled, the files were converted to the .stl (stereolithography) file type to be printed. It was also necessary to produce a set of technical drawings for each component.

6 parts were printed in black ABS, and required sanding and printing for a suitable finish. Sanding and painting was a meticulous task, with the components being so small.
